New 2017 Nissan Maxima at Reedman-Toll Nissan of Drexel Hill for Drexel Hill, PA

You want a sedan and you want it to have power and ride comfort? Look no further than the five-passenger mid-size Maxima sedan! Apple CarPlay appears in the 2017 Nissan Maxima as standard equipment, owing to the fact that the Maxima received a complete redesign just last year. Not needing to improve on much is a good thing here, with a powertrain nearing muscle car territory and an interior usually only seen in the luxury-level sedan level category. Safety is high with all the preventative tech installed, and it gets top scores in government crash testing-- always a good thing to see. Let's explore further what makes this a standout car, and the one that may be what you have been looking for all along!

Under the Maxima's Hood

The 2017 Nissan Maxima uses a 3.5-liter V6 engine that manufactures 300 horsepower @ 6,400 rpm and 261 pound-feet of torque @ 4,400 rpm. A continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) and front-wheel drive are standard. Nissan has installed 7 simulated gear ratios into the CVT to attain the feeling of a regular automatic transmission, something sorely missed in other, excessive-rev CVTs. In EPA-estimated fuel economy testing, they said it sees 25 mpg combined (21 city/30 highway), but some drivers can expect even better than that, owner reports are showing-- up to 28 mpg combined!

Design of Nissan Maxima

The 2017 Nissan Maxima is available in 5 trim levels: S, SV, SL, the sporty SR and the top-of-the-line Platinum. There is also a variation of the SR called the 'SR Midnight' that proudly displays a rear diffuser, a "sport" rear spoiler, and gloss black wheels. Nissan's "Zero Gravity" seats are inside, and are complemented well by quality materials, like soft-touch surfaces on important appearance areas. Standard features of the S trim contain 18-inch alloy wheels, keyless ignition and entry, a 60/40-split folding rear seat, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, automatic headlights, foglights, LED running lights, dual-zone automatic climate control, power front seats (8-way driver and 4-way passenger), and a leather-wrapped tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel. Technology and connectivity items include a navigation system, a rearview camera, double USB ports, a large gauge cluster display, an 8-inch touchscreen display, Bluetooth connectivity, Apple CarPlay, and an 8-speaker sound system with satellite radio, HD radio and a six-CD changer. The SV model put in leather upholstery, heated front seats, heated outside mirrors, front and rear parking sensors, and a driver seat with thigh support and 2-way power lumbar. The SL model gets a "floating" panoramic sunroof, active noise cancellation, a heated steering wheel, ambient interior lighting, active engine sound assistance, adaptive cruise control and an 11-speaker Bose audio system. The peppy SR adds 19-inch wheels, Active Ride Control, a sport-tuned suspension, paddle shifters that use simulated gear ratios, Active Trace Control, and active engine braking that helps slow the car when heading fast into corners or near a stop. The SR also brings to the mix heated and ventilated front seats, LED headlights, and leather upholstery. On top of the SL model's equipment list, the Platinum adds Nissan Connect, LED headlights, premium diamond-quilted leather upholstery, a power rear sunshade, a 360-degree parking camera system (with a moving object detection system), a power-adjustable steering wheel, driver memory settings, auto wipers, and a driver attention alert system.

Right up front, the Nissan Maxima series gets a big handshake and a high five for its excellent crash test scores. Nissan really put a lot of design and know-how into this, and it shows. In government crash tests, last year's Maxima earned an overall score of five stars (out of five), with five stars for total side-impact safety and five stars for total front-impact safety. The IIHS tested the Maxima's forward collision mitigation system and gave it a Superior" for a score ranking. The Maxima also saw great scores from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, taking a "Good" rating in the moderate- and small-overlap frontal-offset impact tests and a "Good" rating in the roof strength, side impact, and seat/head restraint tests. The standard safety points on the 2017 Nissan Maxima are antilock brakes, side curtain airbags, traction and stability control, front seat side airbags, and a rearview camera. The Platinum trim gains a driver drowsiness monitor and a 360-degree parking camera system with a moving object detection system that beeps and relays video alerts on the center screen. On that same trim, there is also standard Nissan Connect, which incorporates remote starting, emergency calling, automatic collision notification, and stolen vehicle locating. Standard on the SL (and above) are rear cross-traffic alert, a forward collision warning and mitigation system with automatic braking, and a blind-spot monitoring system.
